Compassionate Behavioral & Mental Health Services, Close to Home

Behavioral health conditions are medical conditions stemming from changes in brain chemistry, endocrine changes and other physiological conditions. Behavioral health conditions can create challenges have real effects on people’s lives, relationships and hopes for their future.

Mid Coast Hospital offers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services for individuals experiencing mental illness, psychological disorders, substance use disorders or any combination of these conditions. Our integrated behavioral health services can be accessed throughout our health system—including the Mid Coast Hospital emergency department and inpatient unit, our primary care practices and older adult care locations.

More About Our Services

Mid Coast Hospital operates an inpatient Behavioral Health Unit, treating patients with mental health conditions that require 24-hour care. The unit has 13 beds, offering compassionate care, one-on-one and group therapy, and a range of treatments in a state-of-the art therapeutic facility. One of nine behavioral health units in the state, the Mid Coast Hospital Behavioral Health Unit services patients from as far away as Aroostook County.

Mid Coast–Parkview Health provides comprehensive behavioral healthcare services throughout an integrated system of care. Recognizing the importance of mental health in all phases of life, our programs are designed to effectively address the needs of all individuals that need behavioral healthcare.

Healthy Generations

A special program for pregnant and parenting women experiencing problems with alcohol or other drugs, the Healthy Generations program is integrated within Outpatient Behavioral Health, Maternity Care, and Mid Coast–Parkview Health Pediatric teams. Services include substance abuse treatment, smoking cessation, parenting classes, individual and family counseling, and child development assessment, as well as referral services. Services are provided in the home with the goal of supporting individual and family development by offering women tools to live a positive, healthy life in which to raise their young children. Staff from Healthy Generations often attends prenatal and post delivery pediatric appointments at their clients request to assist with content, goals, and these important relationships.

Senior Mental Health Services

Mid Coast Senior Mental Health Services is a mental health outreach service that offers confidential screening, assessment, and treatment services to adults 65 years of age and older. Its purpose is to help older adults and their families understand and treat issues such as depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, and the grief and loss associated with late-life changes. Services are provided by a team consisting of a clinical social worker (LCSW), a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and a board-certified geriatric psychiatrist. Mid Coast Senior Mental Health Services offers:

  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Psychiatric medication evaluation and management
  • Counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Substance use disorder education and counseling

Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program

The Outpatient Behavioral Health Department offers an intensive short-term, daily program for individuals with psychiatric disorders who do not require hospitalization or have the opportunity to reduce the number of days they may have to be in the hospital. Designed to help individuals develop skills for living with mental illness or co-occurring substance use disorder and mental illness, the program is customized to the individual’s needs. The program length ranges from four to five weeks and includes an intensive daily therapy schedule with individualized treatment plans, skilled nursing, psychiatry, medication management, group psychotherapy and the opportunity for family sessions.

Electroconvulsive Therapy

Mid Coast Hospital offers Electroconvulsive Therapy for those experiencing severe depression.

Our full-service, nationally accredited hospital offers a fully staffed Emergency Department open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The department includes two specially designed behavioral treatment rooms, providing a safe and caring space for the provider team to evaluate and treat behavioral health patients.

In 2015, Mid Coast Hospital developed the Emergency Department Behavioral Health Observation Unit to better accommodate the behavioral health patients who experience long lengths of stay in the Emergency Department. The unit has three private rooms and a common area with a kitchenette, comfortable seating, and natural lighting. Patients are given a menu of calming and therapeutic amenities such as music, art supplies, and spiritual care, to make their stay as comfortable as possible. The secure unit is staffed with behavioral health specialists who provide psychiatric consultation, compassionate care, and long-term planning support.

Mid Coast Hospital Outpatient Behavioral Health operates the Addiction Resource Center (ARC) with two locations in Damariscotta and Brunswick. The ARC provides a full range of professional assessment, treatment, psychiatry, withdrawal management, medications for substance use disorders  (suboxone, vivitrol, naltrexone, nicotine replacement) and counseling services for individuals affected by alcohol or drug related concerns. ARC programs include Intensive Outpatient, Individual, Group and Family Outpatient sessions.
