COVID-19 Update: Accessing Safe & Appropriate Care

Greetings to our community members, and we hope this message finds you well. It is once again time for our weekly COVID-19 community update.

At Mid Coast Hospital, COVID-19 activity remains stable. However, while the situation at our facilities is currently manageable, it remains as important as ever to be vigilant in practicing physical distancing. In his briefings this week, Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), said Maine is still in the middle of its COVID-19 outbreak, and Mainers need to continue taking physical distancing measures until further notice.

At the same time, we are concerned that there are community members in need of care who may not be attending to their health needs due to concerns about COVID-19. We want all community members to know that we are here if they need us and are adhering to safe practices in all of our offices with increased hand washing, universal masking, and physical distancing. Those with chronic health conditions, expectant mothers, parents with children in need of vaccinations can all feel confident reaching out to their providers to access safe and appropriate care. Individuals experiencing a health emergency must not refrain from calling 9-1-1 and should accept transport to the Emergency Department if needed.

We’re also offering telephonic and telehealth video visits in our primary care and specialty practices. Video visits allow patients to have a visit with their provider without having to travel or leave their home. Patients can use the visit to talk about medical concerns, symptoms, get a prescription, a diagnosis, and more. If your provider feels that you need to be evaluated in person, he or she will refer you to the appropriate care setting.

The Governor’s stay-at-home order requires all Mainers to stay at home unless they need to leave for an essential job or essential personal reason, such as obtaining food, medicine, health care, or other necessary purposes. When in public, per CDC guidelines, it is important to maintain a physical distance of six feet from other people. It is also crucial to wash hands regularly for 20 seconds with soap and water, especially after being in public, and to avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.

The CDC also recommends people wear cloth face coverings in indoor public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, or public transportation. Beginning tomorrow, the town of Brunswick will mandate the use of cloth masks for employees in indoor publics spaces.

Mid Coast–Parkview Health has been distributing fabric masks to family members, partner organizations, the general public, and others who need them to ensure everyone is adhering to CDC guidance. We are currently accepting donations of fabric masks to assist with this. Masks can be dropped off just inside the Main Entrance of Mid Coast Hospital’s Parkview Campus, located at 329 Maine Street in Brunswick, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Mid Coast–Parkview Health continues to be so grateful for the outpouring of support from our community during this challenging time, and we thank all those who have donated food, medical supplies, and assisted in other ways. If you are looking for other ways to support our organization during this time, we have also added a page to our Mid Coast Hospital website detailing other ways to help: http://www.midcoasthealth.com/how-you-can-help/. For the most up-to-date information on our COVID-19 response, please visit www.midcoasthealth.com/covid19. CDC guidelines can be found at www.cdc.gov/covid19.

As always, we appreciate your assistance in caring for the health of our community. We hope you have a wonderful week.
