COVID-19 Update: Staying Healthy

As expected with the return of colder weather, we’ve begun to see a resurgence in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations statewide.

At Mid Coast–Parkview Health, we have been planning for additional surges in COVID-19 for several weeks. Mid Coast Hospital has been identified within the MaineHealth system as one of the sites where COVID-19 inpatient care is concentrated. This allows the system to leverage clinical experience and most effectively use specialists and resources while caring for COVID-19 patients.

Mid Coast Hospital continues to care for patients in separate treatment areas and has dedicated care teams for patients with symptoms of COVID-19. This allows for non-COVID-19 inpatient and outpatient care to take place in non-COVID-19 areas.

Maintaining patient and care team safety is our top priority. Our facilities are taking several measures to ensure the highest level of safety for patients and staff. In addition to screening all Mid Coast–Parkview Health employees and patients upon entering our facilities, we have safety protocols in place including universal masking, social distancing, stringent hand hygiene, and enhanced cleaning routines in all of our facilities.

In these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to look after your health. Now is a good time to reach out to your provider to ensure you are up to date with needed care. Providers may recommend a telehealth visit which allows providers and patients to interact via telephone or face-to-face via a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer. Patients can use the visit to talk about medical concerns, symptoms, get a prescription, a diagnosis, and more.

In order to ensure that you remain as healthy as possible during COVID-19, you should eat a healthy diet, get needed exercise, and maintain good sleep habits. This year, one of the best things you can do in addition to wearing a mask, washing your hands, and keeping your distance from others, is to get a flu shot for you and your family members. Getting a flu shot this year not only reduces risk from flu, but also helps to conserve potentially scarce healthcare resources while we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

If needed, Mid Coast Hospital offers COVID-19 drive-thru testing by appointment. We ask that you first contact your primary care provider. He or she can review your symptoms and direct you to a site for further evaluation or testing. If you do not have a local provider and are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, the Mid Coast Hospital Walk-In Clinic is available for medical evaluation. To view wait times and check in online, visit www.midcoasthealth.com/walkin.

Please remember that the Maine CDC continues to mandate physical distancing and gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited. As of last week, all Mainers are now required to wear cloth face coverings in public. Following these safety measures is the best way for you to help your community healthcare system by limiting the spread of the virus.

These guidelines are very important to remember especially as you consider plans for the holidays. This year, it is essential to find creative ways to celebrate and honor traditions while keeping our loved ones safe. Given that masks are removed while eating, dining with people who live outside your home is a high-risk situation. Finding creative ways to get together without "being” together is key to preventing the spread of COVID-19. Also, keep in mind that travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others.

Though COVID-19 has understandably caused a lot of anxiety for everyone, please know that Mid Coast–Parkview Health is here to provide safe care for you as needed. As we enter the ninth month of navigating this pandemic, we thank you for your continued support.

Mid Coast–Parkview Health continues to maintain a COVID-19 webpage at www.midcoasthealth.com/covid19. Additionally, the Mid Coast Hospital COVID-19 Information Line can be reached by calling (207) 373-6699.
