Local Partners Promote Health at Curtis Memorial Library

Last month, local partners teamed up to promote healthy eating and physical activity at the Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 Storywalk program at Curtis Memorial Library. The free event was offered through the Community Health Information Partnership (CHIP), an ongoing collaborative effort of Curtis Memorial Library, Mid Coast Hospital, and Parkview Adventist Medical Center. More than forty area children attended.

The Storywalk is a unique way to promote literacy and physical activity as participants walk from page to page to read a book that is spread across a designated area. The April CHIP event featured a walk through the library to read the 18 pages of “Wild Animal Alphabet” by popular Maine author and illustrator Dahlov Ipcar. After the Storywalk, children created their own Wild Animal Snacks from an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables.

As part of the program, children were given five multicolored bracelets to wear as an educational tool to remember to eat the recommended 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Each time a serving was eaten, the student moved a bracelet from one arm to the other. Many children recognized the “5-A-Day” bracelets from Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 initiatives at their local schools.

Area schools have been promoting the 5-2-1-0 message for almost five years when Mid Coast began collaborating with them to create healthier environments for students. 5-2-1-0 focuses on four positive health behaviors that are recommended to increase physical activity and healthy eating including: eating five fruits and vegetables per day, limiting screen time to two hours per day, engaging in one hour or more of physical activity per day, and limiting sugar sweetened beverages to zero.
