Sarah Smiley Addresses Crowd at Mid Coast Hospital’s 24th Annual Women’s Wellness Day

Women's Event Celebrates Community, Promotes Health
“There is a sense of community in this state that they don’t have in other places,” stated Sarah Smiley as she addressed the crowd at Mid Coast Hospital’s 24th Annual Women’s Wellness Day on May 19. More than 75 women turned out for this year’s event, seeking health information and joining in celebration of the health and wellness of women in their community.

Attendees of this year’s Women’s Wellness Day had the privilege of listening to keynote speaker Sarah Smiley who offered insight on the true meaning of community as she reflected on her personal story and most recent book, Dinner with the Smileys. “What started as filling a void while my husband was deployed became more about bringing community together again,” she said. “That’s why I’m here today. That’s what this is about too.”

In addition to hearing Sarah Smiley speak, women came to participate in health screenings, share resources, and take-part in workshops designed to introduce new wellness concepts and begin or continue on a path to personal health. One-on-one consultations and screenings were provided in partnership with “Health on the Move,” an initiative of the Cumberland Public Health District.

Janet Nelson of Brunswick attended the event for the first time this year. “I found lots of materials to bring back to my children, grandchildren, and others,” she said. “Whatever I can do to help spread the word about health.”

Workshops covered topics on nutrition, meditation, and fitness including “Loving Kindness Meditation” where participants learned to quiet their minds and engage their hearts; and “Drums Alive®,” a music and rhythm group fitness class offered by local instructor Carol Richards. Women’s Fitness Studio in Brunswick also conducted two workshops that focused on making fitness goals more attainable.

Mid Coast Hospital features a special event for women each year. As caregivers and health decision makers for their families, a woman’s own needs often become less of a priority. As part of its commitment to the health and well-being of the community, these events help women to prioritize their health and take steps toward a healthier lifestyle.
