Mid Coast Hospital Partners in Landmark Research Study

As part of a national landmark study, researchers from the American Institutes for Research and the National Council of States Board of Nursing recently visited Mid Coast Hospital to interview and observe newly graduated nurses. The goal of the visit was to compare the job requirements of entry-level nurses with the questions asked on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).

"We always welcome the opportunity to provide input and information, ultimately contributing to improved excellence in nursing,” said Paul Parker, Director of Nursing Education and Practice at Mid Coast Hospital.

The Entry Level Nursing Functional Job Analysis Study aims to compare knowledge and skills asked on the NCLEX to what is required of newly graduated nurses in the field. The ultimate goal of the study is to bring the NCLEX licensure exam more in alignment with what nurses need to know as they enter the nursing profession.

Research associates worked with nurses from several Mid Coast Hospital departments including Medical Surgical, Intensive Care, Emergency, Maternity, and the Operating Room. In addition, they spoke with new nurses from CHANS Home Health Care and Mid Coast Senior Health Center, both part of the Mid Coast Health family of services. The researchers job-shadowed each of the nurses, conducted one-on-one interviews, and held open sessions with panel discussions.

The findings from their visit will be incorporated into a national survey administered to entry-level nurses from across the U.S. Results from the final survey will be used to modify the NCLEX licensure examination.

The NCLEX is the national nursing licensure examination that requires a minimum of 75 questions and a maximum of 265 questions. The test progresses through questions based on the test taker’s response to the question before. Questions are often single answer, but may also include multiple choice, short answer, and diagram identification.
