What Does an Audiologist Do?

Audiology is a rehabilitation profession that addresses non medical management of auditory/hearing and balance issues. At Mid Coast Hospital, our audiologist evaluates and diagnoses congenital or age-related hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and other disorders.

How do I know if I have hearing loss?

Some symptoms of hearing loss include:

  • asking others to repeat what they have said,
  • speech sounds dull or muffled,
  • television volume is louder than others would like,
  • you have problems listening in noisy group environments,
  • friends or relatives tell you that you do not seem to hear well
  • looking at people makes it easier for you to understand them.

If you are experiencing any of the above, call us today at (207) 373-6176 to schedule your appointment with our Audiologist.

Causes of Hearing Loss

There are several causes. The main ones include: excessive noise, aging, genetics, infections to the head or ear, and reaction to drugs or cancer treatment. Hearing loss can occur at any time, at any age. In fact, most people with hearing loss (65%) are younger than age 65! There are six million people in the U.S. ages 18-44 with hearing loss, and around 1.5 million are school age children.

Hearing Aids

Mid Coast Hospital Audiology offers the latest technology in hearing aids. If the audiologist recommends hearing aids, she will discuss the various options with you and help to answer your questions. Learn more about hearing aids.
