Southern Maine's chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing presented its first annual Excellence in Nursing Leadership award to Lois Skillings, a registered nurse and vice president for nursing and patient care services at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine. The award was presented at the society's annual June dinner in Yarmouth.

Skillings, a registered nurse for 23 years, was specifically cited for her promotion and support of nursing, her support of the development of nursing leadership skills in her colleagues, as well as for demonstrating excellence in leadership herself. Skillings speaks regularly to undergraduate and graduate nursing students on individual excellence in practice and on strategies for mutual support of nurse colleagues.

"Lois is a staunch advocate for the nurses she practices with and a great role model for developing leaders," said Laurie Caton-Lemos, RN, the awards committee chairperson for Kappa Zeta Chapter-at-Large.

Beginning her career at Brunswick Regional Hospital, Skillings has also served at Maine Medical Center in Portland and Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She has worked in most clinical areas of the hospital including the emergency department and as manager of the medical/surgical and intensive care units.

Dedicated to the value of the community hospital, Skillings was the chairperson of the transition steering committee overseeing all elements of Mid Coast Hospital's move to the state's newest facility last December. She completed undergraduate nursing studies at Northeastern University in Boston and earned a master's degree in nursing from the University of Southern Maine.

The Kappa Zeta chapter presenting this award has professional membership throughout southern Maine. Honor students may be nominated from nursing programs at the University of New England, St. Joseph's College, and the University of Southern Maine. Sigma Theta Tau International has 423 chapters world-wide. Lois has been a member of Sigma Theta Tau since 1990.
