Bowdoin College Women's Ice Hockey Team Raises Funds for Breast Health Center at Mid Coast Hospital

Members of the Bowdoin College Women's Ice Hockey team recently presented a donation check of $1,175 to benefit the Breast Health Center at Mid Coast Hospital. Team members raised the funds at hockey games this season by accepting donations for Pink Ribbons, the symbol for support of women with breast cancer.

"We are pleased that so many students and fans of our teams joined with us to support this effort," said Assistant Coach, Lisa Batchelor. "By the end of the season Pink Ribbons were being worn all over campus!" The Women's Ice Hockey team plans to continue their fundraising activities for women's health services again next year.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the U.S., after lung cancer. The National Cancer Institute estimates that a woman in the U.S. has a 1 in 8 chance of developing invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. The risk of getting breast cancer, and surviving it, varies from state to state. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2007, Maine had the 41st highest incidence rate of female breast cancer in the country. However, Maine had the 7th lowest female breast cancer death rate.

The Breast Health Center at Mid Coast Hospital provides an integrated approach to coordinated care. Their experienced team of physicians, nurses, nutritionists, therapists, and pharmacists partner with women and their loved ones to develop an individual care plan. Together they assure the best possible breast health diagnostic and treatment methods available.

"Mid Coast Hospital is grateful to receive many donations throughout the year, but this thoughtful donation really touched us," said Lois Skillings, Executive Vice President of Mid Coast Health Services.

Kim Lynch, Nurse Coordinator of Mid Coast Hospital's Breast and Surgical Oncology Clinic, was very appreciative as well. "It is wonderful that these young athletes put so much time, effort, and heart into raising funds for the women of our community. We are truly grateful to them all!"
