Dr. Kristiina Hyrkäs to Speak at “Research Day: The Recipe for Success”

In effort to continually improve clinical practices and the quality of patient care, Mid Coast Hospital will be hosting an educational program focused on research and the use of evidence based resources to make clinical decisions.

“Research Day: The recipe for Success” will be held on Thursday, February 14, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., at Mid Coast Hospital Café Conference Room, located at 123 Medical Center Drive in Brunswick.

Through a series of presenters and a panel discussion, the event will provide education on the use of evidence-based resources, the protection of human participants, and strategies for linking knowledge acquired through schooling versus years of experience in practice. Participants will be awarded 2.75 continuing nursing education credits for attending.

“One of the biggest barriers to implementing evidence based practices is lack of clinician time and training in using evidence based resources. This is due to the abundance of available and evolving information,” says Estelle Krestos, RN, Nursing Research Coordinator and Co-Chair of the Nursing Research and Evidence Based Resources Committee at Mid Coast Hospital. “This program is a great opportunity for all healthcare professionals and students that will assist them with finding evidence to make the best clinical decisions possible.”

Eira Kristiina Hyrkäs, PhD, LicNSc, MNSc, RN has been selected as the event’s keynote speaker. As the Director of the Center for Nursing Research and Quality Outcomes at Maine Medical Center and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Southern Maine, Hyrkäs has an extensive biography that includes numerous articles and abstracts published worldwide.

Ann Sossong, PhD, MEd, MSN, RN, CAN-BC, Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Maine, Orono and Hilary Speare, RN, Co-Chair of the Nursing Research and Evidence Based Resources Committee at Mid Coast Hospital will also speak. In addition to the speakers and discussion, display booths and resource tables will be assembled, featuring achievements and research projects of Mid Coast Hospital employees.
