Dementia Support Group to Discuss Loss

Caring for someone with dementia is an exceptionally big responsibility with unique challenges and rewards. Mid Coast Senior Health Center offers a monthly support group with presentations designed to help understand the challenges, fostering supportive and beneficial conversation among participants.

On April 18, from 4:30 – 5:30pm, Andy Sokoloff, LMSW, Grief and Bereavement Coordinator with CHANS Home Health Care will present, “Grieving the loss of a loved one to dementia.” The presentation will focus on the grieving process and the complex feelings that may arise from caring for loved one with dementia as their memories fade, and the ways in which the grieving process for those dementia may differ from other chronic illnesses.

After the presentation, Sokoloff will facilitate the group in a discussion about the challenges of care giving in light of the shift in personal connection as memory fades, the need for self-care, and identifying support and resources. The group will be co-facilitated by Cindy Hughes, Activities Director for The Garden, an assisted living home for people living with dementia.
