Millie Stewart's Bio
Director of Volunteer Services

Millie Stewart has been Director of Volunteers since the Volunteer Department was established in 1982, at the request of the Regional Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. The department has grown rapidly through the years, as Mid Coast residents have realized the value of volunteering for their community hospital. It is a great way to help meet the hospital’s mission of providing “modern, compassionate, value-driven, healthcare for our communities.”

About 500 volunteers annually donate time to Mid Coast Hospital in some way.

Millie’s volunteer programs have earned three President’s Awards for outstanding volunteer programs from the New England Association of Healthcare Volunteer Directors, and the Extraordinary Program Award from the American Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals. Millie has also been honored by the Maine Society Directors of Healthcare Volunteer Services with the DOVE award given for excellence in leadership, and with the New England Association’s NEAPE award for professional excellence.

A past president of the Maine Society, she continues to serve on its board as public relations chair and AHVRP liaison and is a longtime member of the New England and American associations. She also is on the executive committee and treasurer of Volunteer Administrators of Midcoast Maine.

Active in local civic endeavors, Millie is a founding board member of Home to Home, a United Way agency created by American Association of University Women, Maine Sixth District Court, and many other local organizations to help combat domestic violence in the exchange of children for visitation with the non-custodial parent. She is a longtime member of AAUW and was also instrumental in the creation of a living history center at Growstown School in Brunswick attended by area fifth graders. In 1990, Millie was honored by the Chamber of Commerce with the “Citizen of the Year” Award for her work as chair of the town of Brunswick’s 250th Anniversary celebration.

A graduate of the University of Maine with a BA degree in journalism and Brunswick High School, Millie worked for Maine newspapers for nearly 25 years. She is married to Allan G. Stewart and they have two grown children and three grandsons.
