School meals are an excellent way for youth to maintain good health throughout the school year. Nutrition departments at local schools work hard to provide delicious, healthful options for students throughout the week.
School meals are designed for everyone who learns or works at a school. Whether you are a student, staff member, or volunteer, freshly prepared meals are available for you to eat. Some individuals may be eligible for free meals; please contact your school or district for more information about requirements.
Additionally, school meals are healthy. Meals offer fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and milk or a milk alternative. All meals must meet specific nutrition standards. School nutrition staff are familiar with these standards, and they are able to create delicious, satisfying meals for students, staff, and volunteers to enjoy.
Finally, school meals support the local economy. Many school meals include local Maine produce and meats, supporting farmers and producers in the local community. Additionally, buying school meals puts money back into the School Nutrition Program, which in turn results in a greater array of lunch options. Students and staff alike appreciate the variety of foods they are able to taste.
